In today's digital age, data storage is becoming increasingly complex. With the growth of cloud computing, it's essential to have a system that provides easy and secure data storage and retrieval, as well as the ability to access data from anywhere. AWS Storage Gateway is a service that offers just that: a hybrid cloud storage solution that provides a bridge between on-premises and cloud storage. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore AWS Storage Gateway, its features, use cases, and how to set it up.

What is AWS Storage Gateway?

AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid storage service that allows you to securely store and retrieve data in the AWS cloud. It provides three types of storage interfaces: file, volume, and tape. These interfaces enable you to choose the best storage option for your specific use case.

AWS Storage Gateway is a Bridge between on-prem Data and Cloud data on S3.

Use-case:

  • Disaster Recovery

  • Back up and restore

  • Tiered storage

  • Cloud Migration

How to Set up AWS Storage Gateway: To set up AWS Storage Gateway, follow these steps:

  1. Create an AWS account if you don't already have one.

  2. Launch the Storage Gateway console.

  3. Download the virtual appliance and install it on your on-premises environment.

  4. Configure the virtual appliance using the console.

  5. Create a storage gateway volume or file share.

  6. Map the volume or file share to your on-premises server.

Types of AWS Storage Gateway:

  1. File Gateway:
  • The file gateway offers a network file system (NFS) or server message block (SMB) interface to store and retrieve files in Amazon S3. It also offers a file interface to enable file-based storage access to S3 using standard protocols such as NFS and SMB.

  • This is a virtual appliance installed at the customer's site i.e. on-prem and through this virtual appliance file share takes place, i.e. files are shared over the network (NFS).

  • Most recently data is cached in File GW

  • IAM Role must be assigned to this File GW n order to access S3 Bucket

  • The S3 bucket can be accessed by NFS and SMB protocol

  • Can be mounted on many Servers

  1. Volume Gateway: Block storage using iSCSI protocol backed by S3.

The volume gateway provides a block storage interface to store data in Amazon S3 and Amazon EBS. It supports both iSCSI and Fibre Channel protocols to enable on-premises applications to store data in the cloud.

  • Can create EBS snapshots from the volumes and restore them as EBS!

  • Up to 32 volumes per GW

  • Each volume up to 32TB in cached mode (1PB per GW)

  • Each volume up to 16TB in stored mode (512TB per GW)

There are 2 types of Volume-GW:

  • Cached volumes: low latency access to most recent data, full data on S3

  • Stored volumes: the entire dataset is on-prem, scheduled backups to S3

  1. Tape Gateway: Some companies have a backup process that involves physical Tapes. The tape gateway provides a virtual tape library (VTL) interface to store data in Amazon S3 and Glacier. It also enables you to create and manage virtual tapes using existing tape-based backup and recovery processes.
  • With Tape GW, companies use the same process however in Cloud

  • We have Virtual Tape Library - VTL, backed by Amazon S3 and Glacier

  • Backup data using existing tape-based processes (and iSCSI interface)

  • Works with leading backup software vendors

  • Once these files are in Tapes, you cannot access them. For you to be able to access these Tapes you need to restore the Tape entirely.

  1. Amazon FSx File Gateway [For WINDOWS]: Gives Native access to Amazon FSx for Windows File server
  • Local cache for frequently accessed data

  • Windows native compatibility [SMB, NTFS, Active Directory]

  • Very useful when you want/have to group file shares and home directory

How does AWS Storage Gateway work?

AWS Storage Gateway deploys a virtual appliance on-premises that connects to the cloud-based storage service. The virtual appliance acts as a bridge between your on-premises application and the cloud storage service. The data is stored in the cloud, and the virtual appliance caches frequently accessed data locally to provide low-latency access to the data.

In conclusion:

AWS Storage Gateway is a versatile hybrid storage solution that provides seamless data access and storage. Its three types of storage interfaces and various use cases make it an excellent choice for businesses of all sizes.

By following this comprehensive guide, you can set up AWS Storage Gateway and take advantage of its powerful features for your data storage and management needs. With AWS Storage Gateway, you can seamlessly store, backup, archive, replicate, and retrieve data between your on-premises and cloud environments, making it a valuable tool for hybrid cloud storage.

By leveraging the benefits of AWS Storage Gateway, you can reduce costs, improve data durability, increase data availability, and enhance overall operational efficiency. Start using AWS Storage Gateway today and take advantage of its comprehensive features to manage your data effectively and efficiently.
